To help raise money for Special Olympics Georgia, around 150 people decided to spend three minutes in Lake Lanier with the water temperature at a chilly 44 degrees. Bring a towel and stay warm.

Inmates at the Gwinnett County Jail received five dogs that were saved from being euthanized and are training them in simple commands to ready them for adoption through a new program called Operation Second Chance. Two inmates share each dog while feeding, training and caring for them. The dogs live with the inmates in their cell.

I just returned home from a whirlwind 11 days in Italy. Four cities and two islands with no rest in between. Here are three posts from my adventure!

Cause this is Thriller…..

So a few weeks ago people in different cities all over the world participated in Thrill the World. A tribute to the late King of Pop and a world record holding event over 32,000 people danced simultaneously to Thriller. For the Atlanta area around 30 zombified beings came to Marietta to dance and be…well..zombies.

Last week Freeman Mill Elementary School in Lawrenceville opened their new science classroom. The school received a $20,000 grant from the AT&T Foundation to open the lab. I got to shoot on the first day that the room was open for students to learn about science.

Caroline had her first liver transplant at 12 months old due to acute liver failure and her second transplant on April 9 of this year, marking the 300th liver transplant performed by doctors at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. I got to spend a few hours with Caroline and her family.

by jtphillips on Aug.25, 2009, under Feature, Photojournalism
On the way home from shooting the first football game of the season a storm rolled through Gwinnett County. I decided that since it had been lightning since I had gotten into my car all the way until I was almost home that I would stop and try my luck!

Yes We’re Open

Over the past week I have been visiting a little grocery in Lawrenceville called Bolton’s Store. It’s located off of New Hope Road and sits off to the side of the highway. Owned and operated by Joyce Bolton with the help of her son J.C. and their friends Julie and Caroline Barrett, the store has been a fixture in the town for over 50 years. So come on in, take a load off, and check it out.
