by jtphillips on Mar.31, 2009, under Photojournalism, Sports

Tonight I covered the Parkview vs Brookwood girls soccer game. Parkview scored their first goal early in the game and then added three more in the second half to win 4-0.

The White Mountains

by jtphillips on Mar.25, 2009, under Feature, Photojournalism

Traipsing through the woods over this past weekend gave me a small pang of missing the mountains I have played in for the past three years. I’ve put together a collection of photos from hiking and kayaking trips into the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Along the way is a collage type trip through fall and winter visiting places such as Mount Hedgehog, the Sacco River, Chocorua Lake and Mt. Washington.
Fun Fact #326 The photos of kayaking and the dog sled racing are both shot on Chocorua Lake.

Inmate Seminary

by jtphillips on Mar.24, 2009, under Feature, Photojournalism

So today was my first day back as a full-time shooter for the Gwinnett Daily Post. The first assignment I had was at Phillips State Prison in Buford documenting a class of 30 inmates who have decided to study the seminary and take college courses while incarcerated. A majority of these men are serving life sentences. The program is modeled after the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary and the inmates go to a three hour class for four days out of the week. The program was started at Angola Prison in New Orleans and the most recent graduating class included close to 150 inmates from the prison. I thought this was an awesome story that has the potential to become a longer piece.

Sustainapalooza

by jtphillips on Mar.22, 2009, under Feature, Music, Photojournalism

So for the past few days I have been out of town but I am back with some new posts to add to the site. I went to Athens this past Thursday for Sustainapalooza, a go-green friendly concert put on at Legion Field. A few of the bands that played included Jazz Chronic, S2, and Five-Eight. Jazz Chronic then played a later show at Nowhere Bar in downtown.

An Excerpt from Alex

by jtphillips on Mar.14, 2009, under Feature, Photojournalism, Sports

I am shooting a long term project on a high school junior named Alex. Alex was placed in a wheelchair after a car wreck left him paralyzed. He spent a month recovering from his injuries at the Shepherd Center in Atlanta. A few weeks ago Alex joined his school’s track team and today he participated in his second meet. Today was also the first time Alex got to compete against other students in wheelchairs. Alex competed in the 200 and 800 yard dashes and the shot put placing first in both of the track events and second in the field. Alex and his family have been very generous to allow me into their lives so here is an excerpt from the longer story.

The Road Less Travelled (Girls)

by jtphillips on Mar.11, 2009, under Photojournalism, Sports

Unfortunately the Bainbridge girls team did not fair as well as the boys. They were stomped by Southwest Dekalb during the semi-final round of the state tournament at the Arena at Gwinnett Center in Duluth this afternoon. I shot this game as well as the boys game against Tucker for the Albany Herald, a sister paper of the Gwinnett Daily Post.

The Road to State (Boys)

by jtphillips on Mar.11, 2009, under Photojournalism, Sports

This evening I shot the AAAA GHSA Bainbridge - Tucker game for the Albany Herald, a sister paper of the Gwinnett Daily Post. This semi-final round was played at the Arena at Gwinnett Center in Duluth and was an entertaining game. I really like the fact that this game and the girls’ game went from a fairly standard assignment to something really fun to photograph due to the fact that I got to shoot from the catwalk!

Quidditch Anyone?

by jtphillips on Mar.10, 2009, under Feature, Photojournalism

Last night I shot the first ever Quidditch Match between Parkview and Brookwood. Yes, straight from the Harry Potter series and complete with broomsticks the two teams battled over the quaffle using skill and bludgers (dodgeballs). Brookwood was leading Parkview until the end of the third period where the Golden Snitch streaked across the field finally being caught by Parkview thus earning them 150 points and ending the game. So very funny and amusing…
