Burnin’ Down the House
by jtphillips on Apr.30, 2009, under News, Photojournalism
Around 5:40 this morning Gwinnett firefighters responded to a two alarm blaze in downtown Norcross where they found a house over 100 years old fully involved in flames. Over 50 firefighters responded and the house partially collapsed. I arrived around 9:30 this morning and crews were still working on extinguishing hot spots. Thankfully no one was injured.

A Smattering of Sports

Here are a few shots from sports assignments over the past couple of days. Baseball and soccer, two of Spring’s favorite sports…throw in some track and field and you get a trifecta.

Lightning Strikes Twice…or…Gwinnett Braves Home Opener Week
by jtphillips on Apr.24, 2009, under Feature, Photojournalism, Sports
So the Gwinnett Braves have finally started their season. The minor league feeder team has a brand new stadium in Buford and a brand new look. The home opener week has been filled with ups and downs and I have been there covering it for the Post three times so far. Be forewarned this is a longer post but if you are a baseball fan, or even if you aren’t, I hope you enjoy.

For all of you soccer fans out there here is a few photos from the Peachtree Ridge-Grayson girls soccer game on Tuesday. This was the first round of the state playoffs tournament and Grayson took the 3-2 win over the Lions.

It’s a Doggy Dog World

Yesterday I took the opportunity to go to the Dogwood Festival at Piedmont Park in Atlanta. Filled with music, food and of course art vendors were anxious to peddle their wares. Of note were a group of artists who performed body molds of people and their different body parts. A mother and father were cast together holding the mother’s pregnant belly.

I’m Going to Miami…

Well in actuality Miami is coming to me. In honor of my buddy Ryan coming to visit today I thought it appropriate that I finally post some photos from my visit down south in 2008. Having lived in South Florida for a while these are some of my favorite photos from one of the most populated cities in the U.S.

A Brave New World

Fire Explorers are high school students age 14 - 19 that are interested in becoming full fledged firefighters later on in life. Gwinnett County has a class of 18 explorers this year that are learning those necessary skills. Explorers learn the same techniques used by the full time men and women of the department. Instead of going on Spring Break this past week a handful of the explorers decided that they would drill for an upcoming competition with other explorer programs around the state.

Head on Down the Highway

With a little trial and error Thursday night I got to take a few photos that I really enjoyed shooting. If you have noticed most of the lights on the major interstates have been shut off to try and save their respective counties some money. The newly improved 85-316 interchange has greatly increased traffic flow for Gwinnett however it seems that there is some cause for concern for safety in regards to the decision to shut off these lights. So it seems, for the time being at least, that they have been switched back on.

The South
by jtphillips on Apr.05, 2009, under Feature, Photojournalism
If you’ve heard the saying “The South will rise again” well on Saturday it almost did. I went to shoot the Confederate Memorial Services at Stone Mountain Park. This is the eighth year that they have been held here in front of “the world’s largest confederate monument” but this is the first chance that I have gotten to experience the show. Spectators, dressed in uniform or period dresses, came from Alabama, Florida, Tennessee and of course Georgia. There was gun and cannon fire, as well as speakers, a bugler, a bagpiper, infantry, more speakers, women in hoop skirts and a few yee-haws.

Mmmmm Food for Thought

So I have a few posts I’m very excited about but due to a few timing issues I have to wait a day or two. So in the meantime have some good eats to salivate over.
